Management as an information layer
A large share of middle management consists of collecting updates, translating priorities, coordinating dependencies and escalating exceptions. AI can compress much of this information work.
That does not make managers irrelevant. It changes the basis of their value.
From reporting to judgment
When systems can summarise activity and surface risks continuously, managers will spend less time producing status and more time deciding what deserves attention.
The differentiator becomes judgment: setting context, resolving ambiguity, coaching performance and protecting accountability.
A wider span of control
Better information may allow one manager to support larger or more distributed teams. But a wider span only works when the organisation also simplifies decision rights and removes unnecessary approvals.
The risk of automated distance
AI can make management more efficient while making leadership less human. Automated feedback, generated priorities and synthetic performance narratives can create distance precisely when employees need clarity and trust.
The new management contract
The strongest managers will be those who use AI to improve attention rather than outsource responsibility. Their role will be to make better decisions, explain them clearly and remain answerable for the consequences.
